The Brisbane Bears were founded in 1986 and entered the then-VFL in 1987. After struggling financially and on-field for several years, they merged with the Fitzroy Football Club in 1996.
This merger resulted in the Brisbane Lions. Under coach Leigh Matthews, the Brisbane Lions experienced a period of unprecedented success. They won three consecutive premierships from 2001 to 2003, becoming a dominant force in the Australian Football League (AFL). Key players during this era included Michael Voss, Jonathan Brown, and Simon Black.
Following their premiership era, the Lions went through a rebuilding phase. The club plays its home games at The Gabba in Brisbane. The Brisbane Lions' club colors are maroon, blue, and gold. The club has a strong supporter base and remains a significant part of the Brisbane community.
